IS IT PAT TESTING OR EET TESTING? You may have heard of the terms PAT Testing or, more recently, EET Testing. EET Testing stands for Electrical Equipment Testing. The new IET 5th Edition Code of Practice for the In-Service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment introduces changes, including the transition from PAT Testing (Portable Appliance Testing) to EET Testing (Electrical Equipment Testing). While the term PAT Testing is still widely recognized and used for certified appliance safety checks, EET Testing is expected to gradually take its place. For free advice regarding PAT or EET Testing, feel free to get in touch with us.

What is PAT Testing?

PAT Testing, or Portable Appliance Testing, refers to the process of conducting certified appliance safety checks on electrical equipment to ensure it is safe for use.

Initially, we perform a visual inspection to identify any exposed wires or burnt cables. Following this, we utilize specialized PAT Testing equipment to conduct Electrical Equipment Testing, which includes checking for Earth Continuity and insulation resistance among other factors. If the appliance meets safety standards, it will receive a green sticker; a red sticker indicates a failure, while a blue sticker signifies a completed visual inspection. Upon finishing all tests, we provide an appliance register and certification that documents whether items have passed or failed.

Portable Appliance Testing (PAT Testing) in Surrey is a crucial component of a Health & Safety policy for your business. According to the Health & Safety Executive (HSE), 25% of reported electrical accidents involve portable appliances, highlighting the importance of certified appliance safety checks. The Electricity at Work Regulations (EWR) impose a legal responsibility on both employers and employees to adhere to these regulations, ensuring that Electrical Equipment Testing is conducted as necessary and that all due care is taken to prevent any danger from using electrical equipment.

The Health & Safety at Work Act (1974) places an obligation on employees where appliances are used, and on the public who may use appliances in places such as hotels, hostels, schools, and shops. This includes scenarios where appliances are supplied, hired, or where they are serviced and repaired. To comply with these regulations, it is essential to implement a systematic and regular programme of maintenance, inspection, and testing of Portable Appliances, including certified appliance safety checks and Electrical Equipment Testing. Noncompliance can lead to a fine of £5,000 per item, with the possibility of six months' imprisonment or even charges of manslaughter in the event of deaths. Additionally, landlords may face civil damages claims from tenants, and employers could encounter claims from employees. It's crucial to note that your property insurance or public liability insurance may also become invalid if these safety standards are not met.
